We all know metal braces, right? We’re sure nobody needs reminding of what they look and feel like, because they’ve been around for quite literally decades. Braces, like any technology and treatments in orthodontics, are never done developing. There’s always something on the horizon, some new treatment system or orthodontic marvel, and that has never been truer than the introduction of Invisalign braces. Well, we call them braces, but actually they’re not really braces at all… Are Invisalign better than metal braces?

How they work and what they’re made of

Some of the most fundamental differences come down to how the two different systems work and what they’re made of. Basically, this comes down to comfortability. Traditional fixed braces are made of metal wires and brackets and fixed in place with dental glue. They famously tug and pull on your teeth from the offset, causing quite a bit of discomfort and pain. Even the materials they’re made of irritate the soft tissues in many patients’ mouths, cutting or rubbing on the inside of the cheeks or gums. Invisalign work very differently – they’re aligners that fit like a gum shield (though much more discrete and flattering). They gently guide your teeth into a more uniform position, creating a constant pressure rather than a forceful tug. They’re also made of a smooth, clear plastic so they’re highly unlikely to irritate or cut any soft tissues in your mouth. In terms of comfortability during wear time, Invisalign braces definitely wins this round.

How long the treatment takes

Traditional braces are known for taking a sizeable amount of time to correct your teeth. It’s estimated that they could take 2 years or more to achieve their final results, which is a long time to wear something potentially very uncomfortable and visibly a little embarrassing. Not only this, but they need regular check-ups and adjustments, not to mention fixing if a wire painfully snaps or a bracket dislodges. Invisalign, on the other hand, has an average treatment time of just 1 year. They need no adjustments, wire cutting, or tightening, and most of your teeth straightening happens at home. For a relatively more comfortable ride and a comparatively shorter treatment time, Invisalign braces are probably your best bet.

How they look on your teeth

This is often the main point of contention for those considering braces – their appearance. Braces are associated with their visibility, with a lot of adult patients shying away from them for fear of embarrassment. Straightening your teeth with braces was undergone as a teenager, when you could weather this kind of embarrassment as part of your coming of age story, but adults tend to veer harshly away from these metal commitments! Invisalign braces are far more preferable for those seeking to distance themselves from ‘metal mouth’, because Invisalign are clear. They’re hardly recognisable on your teeth and – brace yourselves – they’re removable! You don’t need to worry about how they look when smiling because of their transparency, but if you also want to pop them out for a photo op or meal time then you absolutely can. They’re not fixed, making your treatment accommodate your lifestyle flawlessly.
