If you’re looking for orthodontic treatment in Stockport, Manchester and wondering how to choose the right dentist for your treatment, then it’s worth thinking about the information you need and what you should ask during your initial consultation.

Here at Heaton Mersey in Stockport, Manchester, these are just some of the frequently asked questions we hear about orthodontics every day:

1. What are your qualifications and experience as an orthodontist?

Although many excellent dentists offer orthodontic treatments, there are distinct benefits to visiting a specialist orthodontist in Stockport. Here at Heaton Mersey Orthodontic Centre based in Manchester, we only offer orthodontics, enabling us to take our knowledge and treatments to a deeper level than more general dentists. We use cutting-edge technology and techniques, and are able to provide a wide range of tooth straightening options.

Our dentists are Specialist Orthodontists and members of world-leading orthodontic bodies such as the World Federation of Orthodontics and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

2. How much will my brace cost me?

The cost of your orthodontics in Stockport will depend on the type of treatment option we recommend, the length of your treatment and any steps we might need to take to ensure that you are orally fit before beginning your treatment. We will always give you a full breakdown of your treatment plan, complete with the overall cost so that there are no hidden surprises.

To help you decide on whether orthodontic treatment would be right for you, you are welcome to attend Heaton Mersey for an initial consultation with one of our experienced treatment coordinators. You would then have a more detailed consultation with one of our specialist orthodontists. You can find out more about our pricing here.

3. Can I have a brace through the NHS?

Orthodontic treatment is available free of charge through the NHS to children under the age of 18. Adults with complex dental needs may be able to access orthodontics under the NHS but, if you have a minor alignment issue or want straighter teeth for cosmetic purposes, this must be paid for privately. We do accept and treat NHS referrals at Heaton Mersey Orthodontic Centre.

4. How often will I need to attend orthodontic appointments?

The number and frequency of your orthodontics appointments will depend on which brace or aligner system you have. Typically, appointments occur four to eight weeks apart once your treatment has started but this can vary. We will always explain what to expect before you confirm that you want to go ahead with your treatment.

5. Will I need to change how I brush my teeth?

If you have a removable aligner system, then you won’t need to change how you clean your teeth at all, as you simply take out the aligner to clean it and your teeth. If you have a fixed brace of any kind, we will carefully explain how you should brush your teeth to get to the food and bacteria that will be harder to reach behind the wires and brackets.

6. What happens if I move out of the area before I finish my orthodontic treatment?

If you do have to move out of the area before your treatment finishes, you should let us know as soon as possible. We may be able to refer you to an orthodontist near your new home. If you are paying for your orthodontic treatment using one of our interest-free payment options, we will also advise you on how this should be managed in the event of another orthodontist having to take on your treatment when you move.

7. How long will my orthodontic treatment take?

How long your treatment takes will depend on your individual case and the type of treatment you’re having. We will explain how long your treatment will take once we put together your treatment plan.

8. Will I have to have teeth extracted?

In some cases, teeth do have to be removed before it’s possible to straighten the remaining teeth. However, here at Heaton Mersey in Stockport, we do everything we can to protect and preserve your natural teeth and to avoid extractions unless we feel they will improve the outcome. We would never extract a tooth without discussing the pros and cons with you first.

9. What alternatives are there to ‘traditional’ braces?

Orthodontics has never been a more exciting field to work in. These days, there are a wide range of treatment options beyond traditional metal fixed braces. From clear aligners to tooth-coloured and clear fixed braces, today’s options are discreet, comfortable and fast-acting.
